Mt Airy was the home of Stephen Philip Grove born 24 April 1810 and Maria
Dillon Robinson Grove they were married Feb 26, 1850

Six children were born of this union:

Lillie Anna Grove born March 29, 1854 died infancy
Louisa Catharine Grove born March 18, 1856 died 29 Sept 1834
Alva Dillon Grove born Jan 9, 1858 died March 23, 1939
Stephen Hays Grove born 23, 1861 died with in the year.


Mt Airy was used as a hospital during the civil war, for both Union and Confederate troops. On October 3, 1862 Lincoln left Wash and drove by horse drawn carriage to Mt. Airy. General George B. McClellan accompanied President Lincoln. He was coming to visit the Fifth Corps General Porter and the wounded.



Home of the Josiah Davis heirs. Josiah had died on August 18, 1850 at the age of 42. His widow was Eliza McCauley Davis who lived at the Bakersville intersection. The family had purchased the land from Daniel Fitzhugh on April 8, 1857. Where the family was actually living at the time of the battle is not known but it is known that the Union Army
destroyed 12 acres of corn and 5,886 rails probably after the battle.
In 1862, the family was as follows-

Maria Elizabeth Davis- age 19
Anna Mary Davis- age 14
The oldest son, Francis MacCauley Davis had married and was a physician in West Virginia at the time of the battle
